Frequently Asked Questions

What is MENtal MATTERs?

MENtal MATTERs is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the mental and emotional wellness of Black men. We create culturally relevant spaces where everyday men can talk, heal, and grow—without judgment or stigma.

Is this therapy??

No, our programs are not clinical therapy. We offer safe spaces, peer support, journaling tools, and community-based conversations that promote mental wellness outside of a formal therapy setting.

What is a "Chop It Up!" session?

It’s our signature program where Black men come together—in person or virtually—to talk real-life issues. Think of it as group conversation with therapeutic benefits, minus the clinical vibe.

How do I join a session?

Click [Attend a Session] on our website. You can choose from upcoming virtual or in-person dates and register in just a few steps.

Is there a cost to participate?

Most of our programs are free or low cost. Donations are always welcome and go directly toward expanding our reach and supporting Black men’s mental health.

Can I remain anonymous in sessions?

Absolutely. We respect your privacy. You can use a nickname or just listen—there’s no pressure to share unless you’re ready.

What is the journaling program?

Our journaling initiative encourages Black men to use written and audio journaling as tools for reflection, goal-setting, and healing. We provide prompts and resources to help you get started.

How can I support the mission?

You can donate, share our content, attend events, or become a member. We also welcome collaboration with schools, businesses, and community groups.

I’m in high school—can I get involved?

Yes! We offer internships for juniors and seniors interested in mental health advocacy, community organizing, and nonprofit leadership.
