About us

Who Are We

MENtal MATTERs is more than just an organization—we are a

movement rooted in the healing, restoration, and empowerment of Black men across the nation. Born from the deep understanding that Black men often carry silent burdens, unspoken trauma, and unseen stress, we exist to create spaces and experiences that allown them to be vulnerable, learn, and heal.

Founded by Dwayne Ware , a visionary committed to changing the narrative around mental health in the Black community, MENtal MATTERs was built on the belief that healing is a revolutionary act. Our work is led by a diverse and dynamic team of advocates, educators, mental health professionals, and community leaders who are united by one goal: to break the stigma and build a culture of wellness for Black men—mind, body, and soul.

We provide access to culturally-relevant mental health resources, workshops, retreats, mentorship programs, community events, and wellness experiences that are designed with the unique realities of Black men in mind. Whether we’re leading barbershop conversations, partnering with schools and churches, or organizing healing retreats, every initiative is anchored in our core values of authenticity, trust, community, and transformation.

MENtal MATTERs isn’t just about surviving—it’s about thriving. It’s about giving Black men permission to feel, to speak, to cry, to reflect, to be human. We are building a new legacy—one where Black men are not defined by trauma, but by resilience, joy, and purpose.

We are Breaking the Stigma, Embracing Wellness,

Healing through Connection and Community because

Black men's MENtal health MATTERs!

Our Mission

The 3 Ps that Drive Everything We Do

At MENtal MATTERs, our mission is simple yet powerful: to promote, protect, and prioritize Black men's mental health and wellness. These "Three Ps" guide everything we do—from programming and advocacy to education and even our logo.

We promote mental health and wellness through community engagement, outreach, and visibility. Whether through in-person and virtual “Chop It Ups,” social media, blogs, or educational initiatives, we’re actively changing the narrative and meeting Black men where they are.

We protect Black men’s mental health and wellness through advocacy and psychoeducation, providing tools, resources, and support systems to help them thrive. We protect them by helping to remove the stigma, creating judgment free spaces, and increasing their representation in the mental health field.

We prioritize Black men’s mental mental health and wellness by placing it at the center of our mission and identity. You can see it clearly reflected in our symbolism. That face you see—his name is TEO, The Enlightened One—represents every Black man we serve. Our visuals, our language, our tone, and our approach are rooted in the understanding that Black men face unique challenges, and need unigue services.
